Subversive Play

Structura Gallery, Sofia, Bulgaria
September - October 2018
Artists challenging mechanisms of social control. The exhibition focuses on the theme of the game as a critical concept and means of expression. It deals with objects and playgrounds as a field filled with contradictory expectations, created for and with the human body. We usually associate the game with freedom and creativity, but it often includes social norms deeply embedded in institutional structures. By documenting and recreating different play spaces, the artists evoke the lack of transparency of these norms, which determine the ways of movement and behaviour of the human body in public space. Curator, Izabel Galliera

Where we are

We spent three weeks in Sofia finding materials and creating work on site at Structura Gallery. We initially stayed in Geo Milev, a suburb a few kilometers out of the centre in one of the Soviet built apartment blocks that dominate the landscape. We then moved closer in for the rest of our time, living close to the gallery.
